DJ v Speaker

What’s best, a DJ or a playlist?  They’ve both got their places and really it’s all about your budget.  It’s always been the big question – do I really need a DJ for my party when you can bring in a speaker and set your own playlist on Spotify etc.

Obviously just having a speaker system with a playlist is going to be far cheaper than hiring a DJ for four hours – however like most things, the cheaper option it does have its drawbacks.  The main reason of hiring a DJ in comparison to just a playlist is an experienced DJ can read the dance floor and get immediate feedback.  If it’s really busy and alive with a certain genre of music, unlike a speaker and the playlist which might go off into another song that’s completely different, they’ll keep with that vibe and keep the dance floor busy.  They will keep everyone dancing and get people on the dance floor and enjoying the evening.  Comparing that to a set playlist which will have different types of songs in different orders, and it might suddenly go off at a tangent in a different direction – all of a sudden the dance floor’s now empty because we’ve lost that vibe.

You also don’t get that three seconds of silence as the next song is transitioning, as with a DJ they’ve got the skills to match the tempo of each song and merge all the songs together perfectly.  So we really do recommend a DJ for your party.  However, we do understand there is a significant price difference between the two.  But we’re happy to help you make the right decision.  Some DJ starting prices start from around about £450. However, a club-experienced DJ who has the experience in home-based events as well as playing live in previous nightclubs before will probably be around £500 to £600 for a four or five hour set.

In the lead up to your event a DJ will spend time with you during the planning stage and ask for a 10 to 20 song playlist from you so they know what you’re into.  You’re paying for their experience and you’re paying for their ability to get people up and dancing all evening.  A DJ could be the main difference between an average party and something that somebody will never forget.  However, I know that a £500 spend on a DJ could be a significant part of the event budget for some and a well-thought-out playlist and speaker combo can be the next best thing.

DJ 2

Hiring a Dj will completely transform the experience for your guests in comparison to a set playlist and speaker.

If you are planning an 18th birthday party which is a bit more of a music nightclub vibe, I would highly recommend a DJ.  Typically, what happens with playlists for 18th birthday parties is someone always fancies themselves as a DJ, unplugs the phone, and starts playing what they think should be playing which tends to kill the dance floor vibe all too often.  So if you are having a speaker playlist option, try and hide the phone or make it apparent nobody touches the playlist.

A DJ is recommended for any sort of evening party where you really want that lively atmosphere. If you’re unsure whether you need a DJ for your party, I’m here anytime if you’d like to have a chat about your music options. They both have their places, and I’d love to see how we can help make your night a night to remember.
