Do I Need Flooring Inside My Marquee?

Hosting an outdoor event can be a daunting task, with many logistical considerations to keep in mind. From choosing the right location to organising catering and entertainment, there are many elements that contribute to the success of an outdoor event. One of the most important aspects, however, is the flooring inside the marquee.  While some may see it as an optional extra, flooring is a crucial component that can impact the safety, comfort, and overall success of your event. In this article, we’ll explore why flooring is so important, the different options available, and how it can impact the success of your event.

Safety First

The first and most significant reason to invest in flooring for your marquee is to provide a firm surface for your guests to walk and dance on.  Without flooring, the ground underneath the marquee can be uneven, soft, or even muddy.  This can make it difficult for guests to move around and could cause safety hazards, particularly for women wearing high heels.  Uneven surfaces can also make tables and chairs unstable, which can be frustrating and potentially dangerous.  By investing in flooring, you can ensure that your guests can move around safely and comfortably.

Protection from the Elements

Even if you’re hosting your event during the summer months, the weather can be unpredictable (we’re in the UK after all!). Rain, wind, and excessive sun can all impact the ground beneath your marquee.  Without flooring, your guests may be walking on wet or muddy ground, which can damage their clothes and shoes.  It can also be a safety hazard if the ground is slippery. By investing in flooring, you can protect your guests from the elements and ensure that they stay clean and dry.

Do You Need Flooring if the Marquee is being installed on a hard surface?

Moreover, if you’re installing a marquee on a hard surface such as a patio or driveway, it’s important to note that the surface beneath the marquee will still get wet if it’s raining.  This can cause issues with slipperiness and can lead to an unsightly and uninviting environment.  By installing flooring inside your marquee, you can ensure that your guests have a dry and safe surface to walk and dance on, even if it’s raining outside.

If it is raining and your marquee is installed on a hard surface such as a car park or patio, the rainwater can still seep in underneath the marquee thus the floor inside the marquee will still get wet.

If you’re having your marquee at home for example, with the marquee butted up to your house, your guests will be bringing in this moisture and dirt into the house without a flooring installed in your marquee.

 No floor, no warmth!

Having a hard floor and carpet installed on your marquee also raises the height of the floor by just over an inch.  It means that the floor is insulated which will be a godsend if your event falls between September – April.  Imagine if your event is being held during the winter time, if the air temperature is around 5 degrees, it probably means the grass or hard surface your marquee is being install on is just above freezing.  Lifting the flooring up from the ground will ensure the heat generated by the marquee heaters will stay inside the marquee and not get lost through the cold floor.

If you’re having a marquee event in the winter, having flooring inside your marquee is must pretty much I can’t think of many events we’ve done in these winter months that we haven’t put a floor in.  Usually we turn down jobs that unfortunately haven’t got the budget to afford a floor.  We know it won’t work and I don’t want to play a part in somebody being very cold for their event!

Aesthetic Appeal

Flooring also helps to define the space within your marquee.  Without flooring, your event space can look like a bare patch of ground, which can be uninviting.  By adding flooring, you can create a defined space that feels more like an indoor venue. There are many different carpet colour options available depending on the look and feel you want to achieve.  This can help to create a more sophisticated atmosphere for your guests.  A different coloured carpet can also help with the vibe or theme you’re looking to achieve. Carpet colours include:

Beige Carpet

Beige carpet comes with a clear plastic film on the top.  which means when your marquee is being installed, or your suppliers are inside the marquee, they do not ruin the carpet.  You can image if it’s raining the day before your wedding, it’s super important we keep this plastic film on to keep the carpet pristine.  If you do select beige, the film comes as standard.  It will take 2 people 1-2 hours to remove the film just before the event.  As cutting the film around the furniture, bar & dance floor does take time.

The colour of the carpet can drastically change the theming of your marquee

In addition to the aesthetic benefits, flooring can also improve the acoustics of your marquee.  Without flooring, the sound in your marquee can be muffled and unclear. This can make it difficult for your guests to hear speeches, announcements, and music. By adding flooring, you can create a surface that reflects sound and enhances acoustics.  This can help to ensure that your guests can hear everything clearly, no matter where they are standing in the marquee.

Maintaining Cleanliness

Flooring also helps to keep your marquee clean and tidy. Without flooring, the ground underneath your marquee can become littered with leaves, twigs, and other debris. This can be unattractive and make it difficult for your guests to move around.  With flooring inside your marquee, you can create a clean and tidy surface that is easy to maintain. You can sweep or vacuum the flooring to keep it looking its best throughout your event.

Improved Comfort

Finally, flooring can help to create a more comfortable environment for your guests. The ground underneath your marquee can be cold and damp, particularly in the evening or on cooler days. By adding flooring, you can create a barrier between your guests and the ground, keeping them warmer and drier.  This can be especially important if you’re hosting an event in the autumn or winter months. Additionally, flooring can provide cushioning for your guests’ feet, reducing fatigue and making it more comfortable to stand or dance for long periods of time.

Different Flooring Options

When it comes to flooring for your marquee, there are many different options to choose from. The most common types of flooring include carpet & hard flooring and cassette flooring.  the differences are explained below:

Carpet & Hard Flooring System (laid to ground conditions)

PROS:

Much cheaper than cassette flooring.

Provides a firm surface for 90% of events from weddings & private events

Can choose from over 14 different carpet colours

Can be delivered with light goods vehicles (vans, not lorries)

Will not damage the grass after use*

CONS

Will not level the terrain and will follow any bumps in gradient

Cassette Flooring

PROS:

Provides a levelled floor taking out any bumps or changes in gradient

Ideal for site locations where a levelled floor will give a professional finish

CONS

Only recommended for high budgeted events as is very expensive

Will leave small bumps in the ground (if grass is soft) when event has been completed due to the weight of the floor which might need repairing

Requires an artic lorry for access

*Abacus uses a grass friendly hard flooring system called Ultradeck.  This is a lot kinder =to grass than traditional wooden flooring system, often named “interlocking wooden flooring”.  This flooring is essentially 8′ x 4′ plywood sheets with battens underneath to lift the floor off the ground.  These battens with the weight of people walking on them tend to dig into the grass if soft, which will leave small dents in your lawn

Do check with your supplier if they have this type of flooring, or a more modern kinder plastic flooring solution like we have!

Conclusion

In conclusion, flooring is a vital component of any marquee event. It provides a level, safe, and comfortable surface for your guests to move around on, protects them from the elements, and helps to create a defined and attractive space.  It’s the first item within a marquee we suggest to include.  With so many different flooring options available, you can choose the style and material that best suits your event and budget.  Whether you’re hosting a wedding, corporate event, or private party, investing in flooring for your marquee is a smart choice that can help to ensure the success and enjoyment of your event.
