What Size Marquee Do I Need for my Event?

There are several factors that will dictate the size of the marquee that your event requires.  It goes without saying, obviously the amount of guests that you’ll be having will obviously be the largest factor which will impact the size required.

Seated events such as a wedding for example will require twice the amount of space compared to a birthday party where more of the guests will be standing.   Also for a wedding you’ll need a larger space than usual because of the various events that be happening throughout the day – the marquee will need room for your guests to be seated as well as space in the evening part where guests are mostly standing and situated near the bar and dance area.  You’ll also need to consider space for any extra evening guests too.  If your event is a wedding, you’ll be grateful for a little bit of extra space as cake and gift tables, DJ areas, and photo booths tend to be overlooked.

As a handy guide below, we’ve made a table of capacity and space required for different layouts of marquees. Having a conversation with your marquee hire company and lean on their experience to get a good idea of how much space that you’ll need and it will always be larger than you think.

The below sizes are some of the most popular sizes – however there are lots of different sizes available as all commercial quality marquees come in 3m width and length intervals.  The table shows the maximum number of guests that would comfortably fit inside each size. If you would like to add other areas such as a bar area, chillout area, area for a photo-booth etc you may want to consider a larger size.

Other factors to consider when working out the size marquee you need for your event

You may also want to consider at the start of your event you may have reception drinks area for guests to mingle as people arrive.  Your ideal plan is to have this area situated outside, however if the weather dictates your guests needs to be undercover your marquee may want to be a little larger than necessary to factor in the covered reception space.

If space is at a premium for your seated event, you can have some of the guests seated over the dance floor and have those chairs and tables removed after the dining is finished.  Any good marquee hire company who really has your best interest in mind will provide you with detailed CAD layout of your potential marquee to help you visualise how much space that you’ll have with the marquee size that you’ve chosen. Also, factor in space for catering tents, as well as toilets and generators in terms of the whole overall outside space, as you may require those too.

For larger events, most reputable marquee hire companies should provide you with a detailed CAD layout helping you visualise how much space you have in your marquee for the various events that will be taking place

Remember, you can always fill space but you cannot gain it.  It’s always advised to have a little more space than necessary!
